CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Block parties have been banned in Chicago throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but city officials announced Thursday they’ll be able to resume July 5.
That leads one alderman to wonder why the city didn't let it happen sooner.
The city will require each block party to have a "COVID Captain" to make sure people who aren't fully vaccinated wear masks and maintain social distancing, as well as ensure there is plenty of hand sanitizer available.
The city will begin accepting applications for block parties on June 6.
44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney says there's no reason for the city to have waited so long to allow the events to return.
Tunney also points out waiting until July 5 eliminates two-thirds of the Fourth of July holiday weekend. He is calling on the city to move up the start date.
