(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Community input is part of the CTA's plan to rethink its bus routes in new project.
Bus trips make up more than half of Chicago Transit Authority's rides. The CTA said its goal with the new CTA Bus Vision Project is to adapt and improve with changing ridership patterns, especially in low income and minority neighborhoods.
The transit authority dropped a detailed public report on the current system with the hopes it'll prime Chicagoans to give their input this year with recommendations expected next year.
One of the key takeaways from the report was that the Great Recession resulted in bus route cuts that made the network less useful and led to a decline in ridership.
“CTA understands the need to reevaluate and consider adjustments to both timing of schedules and geographic coverage of routes.
“Overall levels of service related to frequency and hours of service need to be compared to both current demand and potential needs, especially given all that has changed over the last few years.
“In addition, some route and network redesign may be needed in areas where travel patterns may have changed over the last few decades,” the CTA writes on the Bus Vision Project website.
