(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Peoria Republican Congressman Darin LaHood is suggesting the public give President Trump and his team a chance to make good on the promises he made during the campaign.

LaHood favors much of what President Trump does and says about illegal immigration, including mass deportations. But, he along with some Democrats feel some of the President’s proposals are borderline, if not totally illegal.

He expects the courts to straighten those matters.

“I think they’re also messaging bills. They’re messaging executive orders that, again, put out an agenda that he hopes to accomplish, if not by executive order through codification of law,” LaHood tells WBBM.

In other words, it’s to make a point.

He believes sanctuary cities like Chicago and states like Illinois that don't let police cooperate with immigration authorities are violating the law. He supports the lawsuits filed here.

“It’s based on the Supremacy Clause…The federal government has the constitutional right and the constitutional mandate to do this under the Supremacy Clause,” says LaHood. “What’s happened at the southern border over the last four years is an unmitigated disaster, allowing 11 million people to come across our border.

“In the city of Chicago, the mayor and the City spent $300 million. The City has a budget deficit of a billion dollars, but they’re spending $300 million when they can’t afford to pay for police officers and firefighters and first responders, but you’re giving $300 million to illegals? Again, that’s, I think, a violation of what our federal law stands for.”

LaHood asks people to give the president and Elon Musk some breathing room as they establish their missions.

“I’m willing to give him discretion. I’m willing to give him the opportunity to find out in government where to find excess, where you can find redundancies, how we can make government more effective, efficient and accountable,” says LaHood.

LaHood says he expects Congress to step in if anyone tries to go too far

The Peoria congressman says people voted last November to make the changes.
