(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Two county sheriffs from northern Illinois are explaining why they will not have their deputies enforce the new state law dealing with assault weapons.

Eleven county sheriffs in northern Illinois released statements defending their decision not to enforce the new law.

Grundy County Sheriff Ken Briley and McHenry County Sheriff Robb Tadelman said the new state law violates the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Tadelman said he took an oath to uphold both the Illinois and U.S. Constitutions.

“Laws that conflict with each other put us in a predicament and we’ve been given no real guidance on how to uphold both when they’re in conflict with each other," Tadelman said. "This law was unique and kind of put us in a bind.”

Briley also has 2nd amendment concerns and pointed out the law’s requirement that assault gun owners must provide detailed info about the weapons they own might be problematic.

“If that information gets hacked, and that information is released to the public, the citizens have concerns that they’re going to be targeted by thieves that are going to target their houses, break into their houses,” Briley said.

He said the new law has the potential to make criminals out of people who’ve been law-abiding their entire lives.

Briley also said there are pages and pages of guns listed that would require citizens to register with Illinois State Police if they owned the guns before the new law went into effect.

“I’m 60 years old," Briley said. "I’ve hunted all my life. I’ve had a shotgun since I was 10 years old and I’ve never heard anybody, until now, describe a shotgun as an “assault shotgun."

He said his shotgun is a semi-automatic, but he said pump shotguns can be fired just as rapidly as his semi-automatic.
