CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Where are the Chicago Public Schools students? The Chicago Public Schools system has an in-person learning option now, but attendance figures revealed Wednesday indicate a large number of students aren’t showing up for classes whether it be in-person or virtually.
CPS’ Chief of School Management Bogdana Chkoumbova said that most students in the district continue to learn remotely, and the overall attendance rate for students last week, combining in-person and virtual learners, was 89 percent; but when you break it down "the virtual attendance rate, which was 87.3 percent, was higher than the in-person attendance rate of 72.5 percent."
According to Chkoumbova, that means more than 27 percent of in-person learners did not show up for classes and almost 13 percent of remote learners were absent from classes.
Meanwhile, there’s some uplifting news for 8th graders, as well as high school seniors and their parents. According to CPS, in-person graduation ceremonies will be allowed both outdoors and indoors.
“Schools will have the option to hold indoor, outdoor or virtual graduation events where students can obtain their diplomas and take pictures in their caps and gowns,” Chkoumbova said. “Graduations can either be social events, where mingling can occur, or spectator events that are ticketed and seated with no mingling.”
Schools will also have the option of holding graduation ceremonies virtually.
