CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A 'white' history teacher who had a black doll hanging from a cord in his classroom has been removed from Whitney Young Magnet High School.

There was a profanity-laced confrontation between the white teacher and a black colleague over the doll of a black football player that was recorded on cellphone video and shared on social media.

The white teacher had said he found the doll in the classroom and hung it in the front of the room to see if someone would claim it.

He’s been removed from the school while the district conducts an investigation.

A petition on change.org seeking his firing has been signed by nearly a thousand people.

It alleges the teacher has been “known to spread misinformation and bigotry.”

The Chicago Teachers Union responded in a series of tweets on Wednesday.

“(The district) has a responsibility to provide a safe space for every member of our school communities, which is especially important in a district that serves a student population that is 90% Black and Brown children,” said the CTU.

“We understand the investigation at Whitney Young is ongoing, but practices that mitigate the harm of racial biases must also be ongoing and consistent in our schools,” added the union.
