NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Since their previous contract expired at the end of June, teachers in Naperville School District 203 are rallying to reach an agreement before the school year starts on Thursday.
Educators addressed board members during Monday night’s public meeting, explaining they are being asked to do more than ever before.
“District 203 takes pride in its teachers. We deserve fair compensation for our role in adding value to this community,” said Olivia Jaime, a Spanish teacher at Naperville North High School.
In addition to better pay, members of the Naperville Unit Education Association are demanding better benefits, like vacation time and tuition reimbursement.
“Tuition assistance in District 203 is limited to a $2,000 interest-free loan every year,” Jaime said. “Masters programs cost $25,000 to $50,000. The $25,000 I will pay moves me just one third of the way across the salary schedule.”
The school board has said it wants a financially reasonable contract.
Both sides saiid they will continue to come to the table and negotiate.
