EVANSTON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Northwestern junior will join the field for next month's Augusta National Women's Amateur golf tournament, at the home of the Masters Tournament.

A month from now, just before the Masters, Augusta National Golf Course will host its Women's Amateur Tournament and a golfer from Northwestern University will take part.

Junior Lauryn Nguyen's golf highlight so far is winning the Windy City Collegiate Classic at the Westmoreland Country Club.

Nguyen's parents both escaped war-torn Vietnam as children in the 1980's. Her mother fled on a fishing boat and her father made his way to a deserted Indonesian island.

She was born in Seattle and the family bonded over golf.

"They wanted me to have a life they didn't have and so especially with golf, I feel like it was such a privilege," Nguyen explained.

"I feel like I was able to understand that early on just because I knew their story. I knew where they came from."

Golf led Nguyen to Evanston, where it's given her an education to rival what she's learning in the classroom.

"It's taught me a lot. There's so many life lessons I've taken from it whether it's patience or time management," she told WBBM.

"Also on the course, patience is such a big thing and I feel like I've taken so much from that."

That patience will be tested next month against a field featuring the top 43 eligible amateurs in women's golf, and from every continent except Antartica.
