DEKALB COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputy has died of injuries suffered when his SUV was rear-ended by a semi-truck Thursday night.

State Police said the deputy was parked on the right shoulder of Illinois Route 23 in Waterman. It was about 10:30 p.m.

A Kenworth truck, for an unknown reason, ran off the road and rear-ended the squad car.  The damage was extensive. The rear axle of the deputy’s Ford Explorer was pushed to the rear doors.

The back of the squad car was flattened, and the airbags had deployed.

The deputy was initially in critical condition, but  later died at Kishwaukee Hospital.
The driver of the semi was not injured.

State Police say the investigation is ongoing.
