(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago Congressman was the only House Democrat to vote against the short-term spending bill Congress approved Saturday, and it's because of Ukraine.

Illinois 5th District Rep. Mike Quigley blamed conservative House Republicans for removing military aid to the European nation invaded last year Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The Reagan Republican Party is gone,” Quigley told WBBM Newsradio on Sunday. “It has been replaced with a core base of far-right extremists and probably another 70 or 80 that are just so concerned with how Trump affects their primaries that they have skewed so far to the right as to make governing almost impossible.”

Embattled House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California signaled he would allow a separate vote on Ukraine aid.

In the meantime, Quigley said, “It was a great day for Putin.”

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Democrat from Evanston, said in a statement she would have liked to see funding for Ukraine included.

“There is still broad bipartisan support for continuing our assistance to Ukraine,” she said. “We will get Ukraine the support they need.”
