(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It’s been one week since the polls closed for the 2024 Illinois primary election, and the Democratic race for Cook County State’s Attorney — between Eileen O’Neill Burke and Clayton Harris III — is still a toss-up.

As of Monday night, only about 1,600 votes separate O’Neill Burke and Harris.

O’Neill Burke’s lead has slowly been getting smaller as mail-in ballots have been counted.

The gap shrunk over the weekend after the Chicago Board Elections counted more than 10,000 ballots that, according to spokesman Max Bever, had been mistakenly left out of earlier reporting.

Around 5,200 mail-in ballots were added to the race’s count on Monday from Chicago and the Cook County suburbs.

On Monday, the Chicago Board of Elections said there were 53,768 outstanding vote-by-mail ballots that were either unreturned or unrejected.

Officials said they didn’t expect all of them to return to the board properly postmarked by the April 2 deadline.

Approximately 300 vote-by-mail ballots were expected to be counted on Tuesday.
