CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Democratic National Convention (DNC) protesters briefly breached a security fence near the United Center Monday afternoon, just hours before President Joe Biden was set to deliver a keynote speech on the convention's first night.

Several thousand people showed up for the protest, which began without incident Monday afternoon. Organized demonstrators initially stuck to their planned route and voiced their concerns as more than 200 Chicago police officers lined the streets north of the United Center.

At about 4:45 p.m., though, a couple dozen protesters broke through a metal fence barrier at Washington Street and Wolcott Avenue. Dozens of Chicago police officers responded to the scene in riot gear. By 5:30 p.m., the protesters appeared to be cleared from the area.

Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling said 13 people were arrested following the breach.

The remaining several thousand demonstrators with the March on the DNC continued on their approved route and marched slowly east, back to Union Park.
