ELMWOOD PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There was a very heated school board meeting in the western suburbs Wednesday night over an incident last week in which a student brought a gun to Elmwood Park High School.
Many have wondered why a lockdown wasn’t called when the Elmwood Park High School administration learned a student had a gun in the building and why communication with parents, students and staff was so poor.
Junior Sarah Pritt told CBS-2 it would have been better to know in real-time what was going on.
“That’s crazy that we weren’t notified. And, if I was in a lockdown, I still obviously would have been scared, but it would have been better than having to hear after the situation, ‘oh ya, a kid had a gun in your school,’” Pritt said.
District 401 School Board President Frank Parisi said calling a lockdown with a student in the school with a gun could have been even more dangerous.
“Even though the location of the student was known, the administration did not want to alert the student that they were aware that the student was potentially in possession of a weapon which could have led to further escalation,” Parisi said.
Police arrested the student who allegedly had a gun after he walked out the building.
