(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Students and faculty at Trinity College in Deerfield are trying to deal with the recent death of an 18-year-old freshman, apparently from an allergic reaction.
Besides Avery Gilbert’s family, it is his football team members who may be feeling the loss the most.
Head Coach Willie Tillman on Monday said the team went to Gilbert’s dorm over the weekend.
“Each player walked in the room, set a rose on the bed, gave a hug to the mom and dad and Avery’s girlfriend,” Tillman said.
He started getting to know Avery Gilbert when Trinity College recruited him in late winter, the coach said. He said Gilbert was energetic and aways had a smile on his face.
“I read a Facebook post Avery had on his 18th birthday, and he was just saying how he didn’t think he would see the age of 18. How happy he was to be going to college and playing college football,” Tillman said.
This football season is dedicated to Avery Gilbert.
An allergic reaction is suspected in his Aug. 10 death. The coroner’s final report is still pending.
An online fundraiser for a memorial fund is underway.
