(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois state Sen. Elgie Sims — the sponsor of sweeping criminal justice reforms passed in 2021 — was approached by the FBI this spring about an investigation into a company that makes police body cameras, a published report said.

The Tribune reported the FBI is investigating whether Axon Enterprise tried to improperly influence Sims while he was writing the legislation, which requires every police officer in the state to wear a body camera by the year 2025.

Sims, a Chicago Democrat who works at the law firm Foley and Lardner, listed the Arizona-based Axon Enterprise as a client on a lobbyist disclosure in 2020.

The paper reported that the Chicago Board of Ethics contacted Sims in April 2020 about potential concerns about him representing Axon.

Sims responded that his communications were consistent with his legal representation of the company and covered under an exemption.

Sims’ defense attorney Thomas Durkin says his client has done nothing wrong.
