(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After more than seven decades of racing, the Rockford Speedway in Loves Park is closing in a couple of weeks.
First opened in 1948, the venue is owned by the Deery Family, which decided to close the speedway so the land can be developed for retail, residential and commercial uses.
The speedway's general manager, David Deery, said the family made the right decision but it's still hard to see the speedway close. It’s been “disturbing” to see the beginning of the dismantling of the racing venue, he said.
“It’s very, very tough.”
Deery said special races are being held this weekend, as well as on the final day of racing next Saturday, Oct. 28, to wrap up the Rockford Speedway's 76th and final season.
