Man leaps from fifth floor of burning Edgewater high-rise apartment, is hospitalized

A man was hospitalized after leaping from a window in the fifth floor of an Edgwater high-rise apartment building Friday morning to escape a fire.

Several 911 calls came in at about 5:45 a.m. reporting smoke at the Wyndham Apartments, 5240 N. Sheridan Road, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesperson, who said around 7:15 a.m. that the fire had been extinguished.

The fire appeared to have started in the fifth-floor apartment that the man jumped from, according to the spokesperson, who said the building is equipped with smoke detectors.

The injured man was taken in serious to critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, the spokesperson said.

The fire department’s Office of Fire Investigation was on the scene.
