CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) —Chicago police say “celebratory” gunfire was the cause of the first gun-related homicide this new year.

Chicago police originally reported the first death by gunfire was a 58-year-old man shot while driving along 47th at King at 3:15 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Now, according to police, that’s been revised. The first person killed by gunfire was 51-year-old Victor Luna of the South Chicago neighborhood.

He was shot in the head in his second-floor apartment 12 minutes into the New Year, struck by one of dozens of bullets fired into the air after midnight, police said.

More than 100 shell casings were found near his residence on 87th and Buffalo.

There have been no arrests.
