It might not be October yet, but Oktoberfest returns to Chicago this weekend.

The German-American Oktoberfest Fest returns to Lincoln Square Friday, September 8 through Sunday, September 10. The event was first held in 1920 by the German Day Association to promote the German Chicagoan community. Throughout the weekend, guests can enjoy traditional German pretzels, bratwursts and full steins as they listen to performances by The Phenix Band, Paloma, The Tuesdays and more.

The annual Steuben Parade, which will be held on Saturday, honors Baron Friedrich von Steuben, a German military man who worked with George Washington. Von Steuben converted the colonial army, mostly farmers and tradesmen, into a distinguished force during the American revolution.

The first Steuben Parade took place in the city in 1965. Today, it symbolizes the perseverance of the Chicago-German community and its willingness to give back. Proceeds of the event benefit various German-American organizations including The Rheinischer Verein, St. Hubertus Jagd Club, the American Aid Society, the Donauschwaben Youth Group and more.
