Girlfriend of Joliet murder-spree suspect charged with obstructing justice: police

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The girlfriend of the suspect believed to have killed eight people in Joliet last weekend has been charged with obstructing justice, police in the southwest suburb said Wednesday.

Police say they had identified 21-year-old Kyleigh Cleveland-Singleton as the girlfriend of suspect Romeo Nance and the mother of his 3-year-old son, as authorities were investigating seven people were found dead in two homes on West Acres Road.

Detectives who questioned Cleveland-Singleton Monday believed she made statements “to prevent the apprehension of the suspect and obstruct this investigation,” police said in a news release, and prosecutors approved one count of obstruction of justice against her.

Police alerted the public Monday that Nance was armed and dangerous after fatally shooting the seven people, later identified as family members. Nance is believed to have killed a man and wounded another Sunday at a different location.

Nance died later Monday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a confrontation with authorities in Texas.

An investigation continues.
