(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A free event on Chicago’s South Side is helping send some CPS students back to school later this month with fresh haircuts and confidence.
Jermaine Lawrence Anderson is executive director of the mentorship group I Am A Gentleman.
“We’re providing more than 250 haircuts, for free, to young men going back to school for this next school year,” Lawrence explained.
Waiting for his turn in the barber’s chair was Johnathan from Beverly.
“Getting a haircut is really important,” he said. “It reflects who you are, and people look at it a lot, so you definitely want it to look good.”
Anderson said since 2016, I Am A Gentleman has been looking for fresh ways to give back to Chicago, and for the first time, they’re doing so with haircuts.
“A lot of the young men that we serve come from under-resourced neighborhoods,” he said. “They want haircuts, and they want haircuts that quite frankly they may not be able to afford.”
