(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Police in Darien say they quickly caught a hit-and-run driver who ran into the back of a police vehicle Friday morning and got into another accident while fleeing.

Deputy Police Chief Jason Norton said the first accident involved one of his detectives, who was on his way to work.

“He was stopped at the traffic light at 87th and Lemont Road when the other vehicle struck him from behind,” Norton said. “The detective turned on his emergency lights, and the vehicle that struck him left the scene.”

The hit-and-run driver drove to 7900 block of Lemont Road into a subdivision, where he allegedly struck and damaged a utility pole and signs at the entrance.

The driver went into a townhome owned by his sister, police said, and neighbors called authorities.Investigators say the driver came out of the townhome and peacefully surrendered after officers arrived.

Norton says no one was injured, and the name of the driver is being withheld while charges are pending.
