CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some parents have been wondering when young children will be able to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Now a local pediatrician said her health care system should be able to start administering COVID vaccines to kids between 5- and 11-years old within a day or two of FDA approval.
Vice President of Pediatric Primary Care at Advocate Children’s Hospital and NorthShore University Health System Dr Julie Holland said if the Pfizer vaccine gets full approval, parents should check their online patient portals for appointments.
"We are really pushing to get vaccine in our pediatric offices, so as many people as possible can get their vaccine there," Dr. Holland said. "We should be ready to go within a day or two as long as we have all the components."
Not only will this group require a different dose, she said they’ll need smaller needles and skilled people to inject them.
"Most 5- and 6- and 7-year olds are not enthusiastic vaccine getters, so we need somebody who has proficiency in vaccinating little kids," Dr. Holland said.
Though, she did add that while younger kids are notoriously unhappy about getting poked with needles, this time seems different.
"Honestly, this is the one shot that I have had kids of this age
And while they’re at it, Dr. Holland suggested getting flu shots, as well.
