CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum and the Adler Planetarium provided an update Monday regarding how they will handle the 2023 NASCAR street race, which will shut down portions of the museum campus between June 28 and July 3.
Officials said operating at hours at Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum will be affected by the race, though the Adler Planetarium will maintain its normal hours.
The Field Museum will have limited hours from July 1 – 2, when it will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the last entry at 3 p.m. On June 29 – 30, though, it will operate with normal hours: open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last entry at 4 p.m.
Shedd Aquarium will be affected the most by the race. It will be closed from July 1 – 2. On June 29, June 30 and July 3, it will have limited hours: open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the last entry at 2 p.m.
Officials said any visitors to the museum campus will also need to consider alternate routes to get around the street closures planned due to the race. Here are the suggested alternatives museum officials laid out.
If you’re driving to Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum or the Adler Planetarium
Those driving to the museum campus from the south have been directed to use northbound DuSable Lake Shore Drive and exit at 18th Street, Walden Drive or McFetridge Drive.
It’s a little more complicated for those who are driving from the north, though. Officials said the best route will be to access Interstate 55 between State Street and 24th or 25th Streets. Drivers should then proceed to northbound DuSable Lake Shore Drive. From there, exit at 18th Street, Walden Drive or McFetridge Drive.
The parking lots will be open and fully accessible.
If you’re taking public transit to Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum or the Adler Planetarium
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will have alternate schedules from June 28 through July 3, officials said. The 146 bus, which normally provides service to the museum campus, will not be running.
Instead, visitors should take the Red, Orange or Green Line CTA trains to Roosevelt Station. From there, officials said a shuttle bus will take people from the station to the museum campus every 15 minutes.
For those taking Metra trains, the CTA’s 130 bus will be running normally between Union and Ogilvie Stations and the museum campus.
If you’re walking or biking to Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum or the Adler Planetarium
The Columbus Drive Underpass and Lakefront Trail will be open. Cyclists and pedestrians will be able to use those to access the museum campus.
Here’s the full breakdown of which streets will be closed, and when closures will take place.
