(WBBM NEWSRADIO) —Hyde Park is working to become a better and friendlier place for people with dementia.

Last fall, the community was recognized by the national organization called Dementia Friendly America.

Its goal is to help communities help those with Alzheimer's and dementia.

Block Club Chicago has been reporting on Hyde Park, which Chicago's first neighborhood to earn the "Dementia Friendly" designation.

Last week, in a community online discussion, Tessa McEwen, a social worker at University of Chicago Medicine, offered some tips for retailers dealing with people who have dementia.

"Make eye contact. Maintain a kind voice. Give one direction at a time. Offer to help, rather than pointing," McEwen said.

Tom Doyle is an active member of the Alzheimer's Association. He, too, deals with dementia.

"Isolation is no friend to us who have dementia, and so it is so important that there is someone who is reaching out to those of us who have dementia," Doyle said.
