CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It’s a never-ending story on the Kennedy Expressway: A new stage of construction will begin Wednesday night, weather permitting.

At 9 p.m., crews will make various ramp and lane closures past Fullerton Avenue to Ohio Street, with at least one lane open at all times.

By 5 a.m. on Thursday, officials said the ramps and lanes will reopen. The Ohio Street exit is scheduled to close Thursday night and into Friday. Drivers will still be able to exit at Ohio Street via the express lanes.

Lane shifts, overnight lane closures and significant delays will continue to be the norm on the inbound Kennedy. Drivers should allow for extra time or consider public transportation as they plan trips and commutes into the city.

Inbound Kennedy construction is anticipated to be completed in late fall, with all lanes and ramps reopening and express lanes resuming normal operations.

Of course, the inbound Kennedy project is only the first stage of the larger yearslong Kennedy Expressway construction project. The second stage is scheduled to begin in spring 2024 and will focus on the express lanes. The third and final stage will consist of outbound Kennedy construction and is expected to begin in spring 2025.
