Most Illinois Secretary of State motor vehicle facilities re-opened Tuesday after being closed down in November because of COVID-19.

And a lot of people have been lining up outside in the cold.

It was actually the second day for the Elston Avenue facility on the Northwest Side to be open again.

“I came to get my driver’s license for the first time,” an 18-year-old Rogers Park resident who showed up early told WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller.

“The whole thing took almost five hours.  The waiting time was the worst because it’s cold outside.  You don’t want to stand outside while it’s cold. Once inside, you could have me wait five hours, I don’t mind.”

Once inside, he still had to take his road test.

Driver's license and license plate expirations have been extended for current motorists. Officials say there is no immediate reason for many drivers to go to a facility in person.
