(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The man accused of shooting and killing Kara Welsh, a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UWW) student from suburban Plainfield, has told investigators that he acted in self-defense.
Welsh, 21, was shot and killed on Aug. 30, just days before she was set to begin her senior year at UWW.
After the shooting, police took Welsh’s boyfriend — 23-year-old Chad Richards, of Rockford — into custody, and he was soon charged with first-degree murder.
In a recent court appearance, Richards said Welsh took a gun from a nightstand during an argument at an off-campus apartment. He said he wrestled the gun away and shot Welsh because he feared for his life.
Richards is currently being held on a $1 million bond.
