CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The City of Chicago is hosting a community meeting tonight to finalize plans for a temporary migrant shelter to open at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church.
The shuttered school and convent in Portage Park will welcome roughly 300 asylum seekers, many with young children.
Talks between the City and the Archdiocese of Chicago had taken place for about a year, but were accelerated due to the colder months ahead.
The tentative agreement details a renewable six-month lease with the City of Chicago covering all costs as well as providing security and staff for the shelter 24/7.
There’s been some pushback from community members. A small protest took place outside the church earlier this month.
The community meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church at 3601 N. Lavergne.
