CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Kennedy Expressway commuters may want to find alternative modes of transportation as the second year of construction begins.

As the construction season gets underway on the Kennedy Expressway, Michael Gillis with Metra said the transit agency plans to see more riders taking the Metra train as an alternative to driving.

Gillis said the Metra UP-Northwest Line UP-Northwest Line saw the biggest gains in ridership last year. He believes Metra is the way to go for commuters.

“We are faster. We are less stressful. We are more affordable. We are greener, all kinds of reasons why it’s better to get on the train and out from behind the wheel,” Gillis said.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the closure of the Kennedy express lanes is expected to remain in place until late this fall.

Gillis reminds Metra riders that there is a new pay structure in effect, which is based on travel between designated zones on each of its lines.
