CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — More movie-making is coming to the South Side.
Derek Dudley, a producer of Showtime series “The Chi,” is bringing another film studio to the South Side.
Regal Mile Studios, named for the Avalon Regal Theater that resides on 79th Street near Stony Island Avenue, aims to provide jobs to the community revitalizing the once-bustling 79th Street Corridor, according to the studio’s site.
"He plans to build it spend about $60 to $70 million on this project. They just filed plans with the city for it so it needs city council approval, but this would be a major catalyst for economic development n South Shore,” Alby Gallun of Crain's Chicago Business told WBBM.
Film and TV productions led streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu have led to a huge rise in productions in the city, Gallun said.
"Demand for studio space exceeds supply. Cinespace Studios, which is in Chicago in the North Lawndale neighborhood, is undergoing a major expansion," he said.
And that demand may mean this new studio is not the last.
