Hundreds of local students got an invitation to meet with tech leaders from around the globe and experience never before seen robotics. The RAPID + TCT event features hundreds of STEM experts and 3D printing technologies.

“Around 400 students are coming to learn about this technology and how they can find a career in it,” says Angela Szerlong of SME.

From plane parts to medical prostheses, the event includes 130 3D printing presentations by industry-leading professionals. 3D printing, known as additive manufacturing technology, simply stacks and fuses layers of material. It’s fast, lower cost, and can create more customizable products.

“It’s really exciting for the future and improving our lives,” says Szerlong.

One of the companies includes Thinking Huts which uses 3D technology to print schools in a matter of weeks in areas around the globe. The quick home building technology is also being used in government agencies to provide shelter in disaster relief zones, explains Szerlong.

“Let’s say a tornado or a hurricane were to happen, 3D printing technology can come in and build up homes for people in a matter of days,” says Szerlong.

The event allows Chicagoans the opportunity to understand more about the technology.
