CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Housing Authority board has approved a $37 million redevelopment plan for the Lathrop Homes on the North Side.

Part of the sprawling development, which is among the first public housing projects in the city, dating to the late 1930's, has been an eyesore for years.

It's vacant with boarded up buildings in a gentrified neighborhood along the North Branch of the Chicago River.

Now, the historic buildings are being rehabbed and there will be some demolition and new construction, creating more than 300 mixed income units.

The development includes 121 subsidized units, 92 affordable units and 96 market-rate. Lathrop Community Partners, CHA’s development partner, will rehabilitate seven existing historic buildings on the site, while three existing buildings will be demolished to add a new building with an elevator, as well as additional parking and open space.

"This will include some historic rehab as well as new buildings and that's really important in the community, because the new buildings will provide accessible units, which has been difficult- almost impossible to do with the historic rehab," said CHA president Tracey Scott.

The project is expected to be completed by late 2026.
