(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Brookfield Zoo has two new residents: a pair of Alaskan coastal brown bears.
The 10-month old cubs – a male and his sister -- came to Chicago courtesy of FedEx on Nov. 3.
After being discovered in Anchorage, the young animals were temporarily housed at Alaska Zoo. Animal care specialists from Brookfield Zoo accompanied the approximately 150-pound cubs on the flight to Chicago.
Last week, the zoo’s medical staff collected blood work, examined the young animals’ extremities and teeth, and gave them routine vaccinations, officials said.
“We are happy to be able to provide the bear cubs a home, where they will receive the best possible care, although the situation is bittersweet,” Mark Wanner, director of carnivore/small mammal care and conservation at Brookfield Zoo, said in a news release.
The bear cubs are expected to make their public debut in the near future after getting acclimated, zoo officials said.
