(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A survey by Lurie Children's Hospital says two-thirds of Chicago parents are worried about a possible shooting at their children's school.
Sixty-seven percent of Chicago parents worried about a school shooting. Seventy-three percent of parents worried that a mass shooting will happen in another public place.
"What's different about this survey is, we asked parents about their own concerns for their children, and we also asked them about how concerned their children are. And this is a generation of children who have now grown up with active shooter drills in their schools,” says Dr. Matthew Davis, head of pediatrics at Lurie Children's Hospital.
Dr. Davis said families can take some basic steps to make things safer. For instance, he said, people can make a choice to not keep firearms in the home. Or, at least keep firearms unloaded and separate from ammunition, he adds.
If your child is going over to a friend's house, ask that child's parents if there are guns in their home, he said.
