SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Governor Pritzker said he’s hopeful the Illinois legislature will approve a sweeping clean energy bill in a matter of weeks, but significant differences remain.

"We have come a long way in assisting all parties in getting to 'yes'," Pritzker said.

But the Illinois Senate adjourned before getting there. Still, Governor Pritzker said they are close. But he warns he won’t sign any bill that doesn’t combat climate change, promote equity and clean jobs, and eventually phase out coal-fired power plants by 2035 or so.

"That means that a bill claiming to contain meaningful decarbonization measures, but does not pass muster on the details and does not move us towards a clean energy economy is not a real climate bill," Pritzker said.

"Let me make myself perfectly clear, our long term goal is to create meaningful climate change policy that makes Illinois the leader in protecting our people, the environment, and the clean energy industry we can grow."

The Governor said the House and Senate will be called back into session when the remaining differences are ironed out.
