(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A mural honoring the history of the Pullman Porters was unveiled at the Pullman National Historic Park on Wednesday.

The mural by Chicago artist Joe Nelson is really two murals, on two sides of a viaduct at 109th and Cottage Grove, just off the park grounds.

They celebrate the Pullman porters and their contributions to the labor and civil-rights movements.

“You have beautifully captured the history in the artwork and we hope this mural will educate the community and visitors for generations to come.  Thank you for binging this story to life,” Adrena Ifill with the National Park Foundation told Nelson.

It was Nelson’s honor.

“While I was out here just painting I was constantly getting honked at, just showing me love and it’s great to feel that love and to know the work that I’m doing out here is appreciated,” he told WBBM Newsradio.
