Remains found in marshy area in Berkeley believed to be October 2020 burglary suspect

BERKELEY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Nine months after getting away from police during a chase, a robbery suspect has been found dead.

Berkeley police said a construction crew found skeletal remains Tuesday in a marshy area between the Tri-State Tollway and Eisenhower Expressway near St. Charles Road. Police believe the remains are those of Delbert Miller.

Police Chief Timothy Larem said Miller was one of two gas station burglary suspects who were being chased in a car that went out of control and crashed on that cloverleaf, between the Tri-State Tollway and the Eisenhower Expressway near St. Charles Road, back in October. One suspect was captured and arrested soon after the crash, but Miller escaped into a marshy area there and had not been seen since.

“We have every reason to believe that this is our second individual in that matter,” Chief Larem told CBS 2. “We’ve had family members that have been out there searching with us. We’ve searched several times on our own as well...

“The weather conditions that night, trying to hide from us – it was, I want to say it was 30 40 degrees, misty,” Larem added. “If you take to water, any kind of marshy area, the elements can get you.”

Illinois State Police were investigating. Foul play is not suspected.

An autopsy to determine the identity of the remains and the cause of death has been scheduled for Wednesday at the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
