(WBBM Newsradio) --(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — River enthusiasts along the Plainfield area portion of the DuPage River are concerned that the complaints of one riverfront property owner may lead to the end of public recreational use of the increasingly popular stretch.

William Sima claims his property rights include the river bed extending to the mid-point of the river, and he has asked state government to temporarily close the river portion for public use, pending a review.

Sima lists increasing litter in his complaints and considers people floating on the river trespassing if they step off their rafts or tubes or touch the riverbed.

The co-owner of Plainfield River Tubing, Kris Most, tells WBBM Newsradio the community has been banding together to try and keep the river open.

There is a petition with more than 5,000 signatures and counting, she said.

Most started the business with her spouse. They launched it in July 2020 as a way to help people find something to do during the pandemic, she said.

“It sort of put Plainfield on the map,” Most said Monday. “I always laugh when people from Naperville would come, because Plainfield always went to Naperville for stuff. I said, ‘Boy, when you‘ve got people from Naperville coming to Plainfield, you know you made it.”
