(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 42-year-old convicted felon is being held without bond in DuPage County after allegedly chasing another motorist in a road-rage incident last week on I-290 and firing several bullets at the other driver.

Gregory Johnson of Chicago is charged with one count of armed habitual and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office announced over the weekend.

Authorities say Johnson began pursuing another motorist Aug. 22 after the driver brake-checked him for tailgating. When Johnson pulled alongside the other driver and displayed a handgun, the motorist attempted to exit I-290. Johnson followed and rear-ended the victim, officials said.

Johnson allegedly covered his face with a ski mask and fired about eight shots from a handgun at the vehicle he was pursuing. There was damage to the other car, and police found shell casings on the roadway.

Illinois State Police last Tuesday shut down I-290’s inbound lanes to investigate a shooting around North Avenue in Elmhurst. No one was in custody at that time.

Johnson was arrested two days later when a Berkeley police officer conducted a traffic stop, officials said.

“Mr. Johnson, who has multiple felony convictions, opened fire on another motorist after he and his victim became engaged in a five-mile road rage pursuit. The type of violent behavior alleged against Mr. Johnson placed numerous innocent motorists at risk and will most certainly not be tolerated in DuPage County,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release.

Johnson is next expected to be in court on Sept. 25.
