(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A group of Skokie residents behind three ballot referendums is delighted voters approved them last week to change the way the village elects local leaders.
With 53% or more in favor, voters approved proposals to make village elections non-partisan; in staggered election cycles and with a mix of trustees chosen from districts and village-wide.
The Skokie Alliance for Electoral Reform says the changes will end nearly 60 years of one-party rule.
“We want voter engagement, we want to increase candidate turnout,” Kimberly Polka, a member of the group’s steering committee, said.
She says the alliance hopes to have the new system established by the spring 2025 elections.
