CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Students in one north suburban middle school will get a chance to break out of their learning pods, safely, this week.
Small groups that are key to reducing the spread of COVID can lead to feelings of boredom or isolation, so Lincolnshire Prairie View District 103 is mixing things up Wednesday; by allowing students at Daniel Wright Junior High to Zoom with classmates outside of their pods of 15 to 20 kids to participate in book club, origami, or math competitions.
"Get a chance to at least see kids that they haven't seen in a long time and then be able to talk to them while doing an activity that they all have the same interest in," said Spanish Teacher Erinn Vincent, who is co-chair of the school’s social emotional learning curriculum.
Vincent said it’s important for both remote and in person students.
"They are with those same 15 to 20 friends every day from 8:30 a.m. till 3:30 p.m. and they don't see anyone else," she said.
The school is expanding the curriculum after a "mix it up day" in November for remote students was successful. She said teachers commented it was the first time they had seen some students turn on their cameras.
