(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Satanic minister is suing the city of Chicago for allegedly ignoring his request to deliver an invocation before a City Council meeting.
Adam Vavrick tells WBBM Newsradio the city has left him no choice. The ordained minister of Satan and co-leader of The Satanic Temple Illinois filed a federal lawsuit last week. In it, he accuses the city of violating his First Amendment rights under the clause that bans government from establishing a religion.
“Three years of unreturned phone calls [and] emails disappearing into an email black hole indicate to me, at least, that they’re not interested in having me deliver an invocation,” Vavrick said Monday.
The Jefferson Park resident said the city clerk’s office never told him no -- nor what its criteria is for selecting people to give the invocation before council meetings.
Vavrick said he’d drop the suit if given the chance to do it.
WBBM Newsradio awaits a response from the clerk’s office.
