(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An Aurora man and a juvenile have been charged with gun offenses after they allegedly walked around Fox Valley Mall with loaded weapons and then tried to flee when police showed up.

Alim Hartline, 18, brought a loaded firearm into the Aurora shopping center Monday accompanied by a 16-year-old boy, authorities said. Both allegedly ran away when officers tried to approach them.

Hartline dropped a fully loaded Taurus 9 mm pistol with a defaced serial number before he was apprehended, officials said. The juvenile was found a short time later, “hiding in a nearby port-o-potty,” police said.

Officers found a fully loaded Glock with one bullet in the chamber near the spot where the boy was discovered, police said.

Hartline is charged with a variety of offenses, including one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number. His bond was set Tuesday at $80,000, officials said.

The juvenile, facing one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, has been turned over to his parents and will be on home detention.

“Neither of the two individuals charged in this case are legally allowed to own a weapon, let alone carry one on their person in public,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release issued Tuesday.
