CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Forty-five teen girls imagined, built, and raced electric vehicle go-karts in ComEd’s second annual EV Rally at the Museum of Science and Industry.

“It’s really nice seeing all of these young ladies come together and really enjoy STEM," said Amber Von Ruden, Senior Manager in Project Management ComEd.

Nine teams of young women ages 13- 18 put their electric vehicle go-karts to the test as they raced to the finish line on the South Side.

“I’ve never been part of a community like this before, so it’s really inspiring,” said racer Eva Noftz.

Combining the excitement of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) with the thrill of car racing, the group of young women raced vehicles they built themselves in the ComEd EV Rally program.

“My favorite part has been watching the teams come together during build nights and really form their teams,” said Von Ruden. Students from across Chicagoland applied to the program earlier this year, working in teams to assemble their EV go-karts.

Each participating student will receive a $2,000 scholarship upon completion of the program.
