UPDATE: Judge releases teen without charges after police arrested him for toddler shooting case

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A teen accused of shooting and wounding a toddler on the West Side Thursday has been released from police custody without charges.

A Cook County Juvenile judge ordered the 17-year-old boy to be freed and placed in the custody of his aunt while prosecutors and police continue to investigate Thursday’s incident.

Initially, WBBM reported the teen had been arrested and charged with obstructing justice by destroying evidence and causing a child to be endangered. At this point, that is not the case.

According to Chicago Police, the 2-year-old boy was shot multiple times in the lower body. It happened at about 4 p.m. in a residence near 14th and Avers. The circumstances are not clear.

The boy was taken to Stroger Hospital.

Police said a gun was seized.
