CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Dangerously high temperatures in the Chicago area have local health experts reminding residents to do what they can to stay cool.

"I think the biggest concerns right now is with the high heat and we also have high humidity, and that high humidity sometimes prevents the body from dissipating heat so people can get into trouble," Dr. Trevor Lewis, chair of emergency medicine for Cook County Health.

His tips include staying hydrated, wearing loose and light clothing, and listening to your body.

"You become dizzy, you start to feel nauseous. Those could be signs of heat exhaustion, and if those things start to occur, you really should remove yourself from the direct teat and start to hydrate," Lewis continued.

There are also concerns over some students back in schools without air conditioning, but with face coverings.

"They talk about wearing cotton masks. They're still effective yet a little more breathable. So that's one thing that they could do," Lewis said.
