(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said it should be up to the Supreme Court to resolve the ethical issues raised by Justice Clarence Thomas’ relationship with a Texas billionaire.
Durbin, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, said people keep asking what Congress will do amid reports that Justice Clarence Thomas has received lavish vacations, a real estate deal and tuition help for a relative from GOP mega donor Harlan Crow.
He said Chief Justice John Roberts, though, could end the controversies in a day.
“He can say that the Supreme Court justices — on the highest court in our land — will be bound by the same rules, the same laws and the same code of ethics as every other federal judge in America,” the senator said. “That would be progress, but they’ve made themselves separate from the rest of the judiciary.”
So far, Roberts has opted not to take Durbin’s suggestion. Durbin invited Roberts to sit down with him or the committee, but Roberts declined.
He said the Senate is not giving up, and nothing has been ruled out concerning what they might do next.
