MAZON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Two pigs that had been wandering around in Grundy County, eluding capture, were both caught earlier this week, thanks to the efforts of a local rescue and members of the community.

Chicagoland Pig Rescue said it took a village to catch the pigs that were dumped by someone in Grundy County over a month ago.

They’re male and female potbellied pigs that grew to be pretty large. The organization said both appeared to have had identification tags that were ripped out of their ears.

Before they were caught, Chicagoland Pig Rescue posted on social media that they were “desperate for help" and they were “terrified” and hungry, but they were elusive.

The male was caught after wandering into someone’s yard. The female was later caught in a crate baited with food. They had been wandering along Murray Slough in Mazon.

According to local lore, it was named for a man who jumped in to save a drowning pig, so the male was named Murray and the female Maizie.

Chicagoland Pig Rescue is trying to raise some money for their care and vet bills.
