(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some children who escaped war in Ukraine are now facing another hurdle: paying tuition.

About half of the 215 student at St. Nicholas Cathedral School in Chicago's Ukrainian Village neighborhood rely on scholarships, but Illinois legislators have ended the Invest in Kids scholarship program.

“A lot of hard discussions ahead of like what do we do next?” says principal Anna Cirilli. “This is kind of like a Hail Mary for us, that we’re once again in this seat where we’re trying to help these children.”

Tuition costs about $7,000 a year.

Several other Chicago area private schools are facing the same dilemma because the state scholarship program ended.
